Prime Video, formerly known as Amazon Video (and formerly Amazon Instant Video), is Amazon’s film and TV streaming service. Despite its name, Prime Video is not reserved for Amazon Prime members. Prime Video offers two levels of service: Any user can buy and rent videos, but Amazon Prime members can stream many of these movies and TV shows for free. Although thousands of videos are available as part of an Amazon Prime subscription, many other videos in the Prime video library can only be rented or purchased.

How to Activate Amazon Prime Video on Android TV
Only a few set-top boxes support all of the desired services. However, if you have one on Android, there is usually a workaround. Amazon Prime Video is one of the most frustrating omissions in the Android TV app catalog. However, you can change this in a few simple steps and without rooting.
Amazon generally makes its apps available on all platforms, but with Prime Video, the company is determinedly selective. You must have one of your devices in order to take full advantage of the experience or simply fix it. We will do that now. There are actually two options to choose from. So choose:
Chromecast It
If you have a computer with a browser, you can stream a full Amazon Prime Video tab straight to your Android TV. It may sound less than ideal, but if you have a laptop with adequate computing power nearby, you can play the video in a tab and leave it in the background. If you set the video to full screen while streaming, Chrome knows that the computer should not be displayed in full-screen mode. The video stays in the browser window but offers the full experience on your Android TV.
How does it work? Follow these simple steps:
- Open Google Chrome on your computer.
- Install the Google Cast extension and follow the installation instructions.
- Click on the Google Cast icon in your browser bar (see figure above) and select the Android TV device on which you want to stream. (If it doesn’t appear, click Options to search for new devices.)
- Play the Amazon Prime video that you selected to stream and click the full-screen button.
- Use the advantage!
That’s all there is a slight delay, but you won’t notice anything because you ignore the video on your computer and only see it on TV. Fortunately, you don’t hear any computer sound either, but you can watch the video on the Streaming tab to pause, fast forward, rewind, etc. This option allows you to limit the quality of video streaming, but in my experience, it looks into given all aspects, it looks pretty good and is the fastest and easiest way to get the video you want on your Android TV.
Install Amazon Prime Video Launcher
If you want to watch Amazon Prime Video without the help of an additional computer, you can download an app that gives you an experience comparable to that of Fire TV. That’s how it’s done:
- Surprise, surprise! Go to the XDA forums and download Prime Video Launcher. (You may also need to download the Amazon Prime Video APK, but more on that later.)
- Open the Settings on your Android TV and visit the Security and Restrictions section. The first option should be Unknown Sources. Turn it on. (Amazon Prime Video won’t work without this.)
- You can download the APK in another way if you prefer, but I quickly installed it on my device using ES File Explorer. If you don’t have one on your Android TV yet, download it now.
- Open ES File Explorer and find a network or cloud service you are using. I used Dropbox (the cloud service) and put the APK in a folder in my Dropbox account. Regardless of whether you prefer Dropbox, Google Drive, or whatever, pair it with ES File Explorer. If you synchronize the APK with your account and load the folder and store it in the ES File Explorer, you can select and open it.
- When you open Prime Video Launcher, you will be asked to confirm your installation. It opens a few moments later. You will be asked if you want to install Amazon Prime VOD that you really need to see something. Confirm that you want to install the latest version and wait for the installation to complete. In some cases, it may not download and you will need to install it manually. Just repeat this process, but download one of the VOD APKs included in this XDA thread.
- If you have successfully installed Amazon Prime VOD, open it and log in to your Amazon account.
Here! You can now watch Amazon Prime Video on your Android TV as if it really should be there. Hopefully one day we can install Amazon where we want without the extra hassle, but at least you have a few easy ways to get the job done now.

How to activate Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV
Apple and Amazon had been clashing on the issue of Amazon Prime TV support for many years, with Amazon going so far as to pull the Apple TV from its US storefront in 2016, citing potential customer confusion as to the reason why. Now, in 2018, the launch of Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV has proved to be convenient, where subscribers can watch original programming such as The Grand Tour.
However, Amazon still has streaming battles to fight, with Google announcing in 2017 that it would pull YouTube support from Amazon’s Fire TV platform entirely from 1 January 2018. Google isn’t happy that Amazon isn’t listing Nest (a Google/Alphabet-owned company) devices on its US storefront, and had earlier dropped access for Amazon’s Echo Show platform before announcing that it would remove access for Fire TV owners as well.
