Once you have an echo show device or any Alexa enabled device, you can create a shopping list a to-do list or even a grocery list using simple voice commands.

With the Alexa voice commands you can create, add, edit remove items from a list without having to press anything, and also you can make use of the Alexa app if you prefer to that.
Moving forward, creating a shopping list on Alexa requires a few steps and in this article, I will break down the step by step instructions on how you can perform certain functions to your shopping list using both the Alexa pp and any Alexa enabled device.
How to Create a Shopping List on Alexa
There are two kinds of list you can create using Alexa, which are the
- Shopping list
- Todo List
However, I will be focusing on the shopping list,
To create a shopping list on Alexa, you can either do that using the Alexa app or by using a device that is compatible with Alexa lie Echo show.
Now, to create a Shopping list using the Alexa app, here are the procedures to follow.
- First and Foremost, Launch your Alexa app.
- At the top left corner, Tap on the “hamburger icon”
- Under “lists” locate “create list” and click on it
- Now, the name you want to customize your list with, and tap on “confirm”
After following this you should have created a Shopping list successfully however, if you want to do that using only voice commands, here is how you can go about it
How to Create a Shopping List on Alexa using Voice commands
To do this you need to have an amazon enabled device. For example an Amazon Echo Show.
Now here are the commands to create a shopping list:
- Say “Alexa create a list”, then you will be asked by Alexa what you wish to name your list.
- Now, tell Alexa what you want to name your list, and confirm
You could do it much quicker by simply saying “Alexa Create a Holiday list” and confirming it.
After doing all these successfully Alexa will ask you to add items to your list, to do that you can also use either the app or your voice.
Here’s how to add items to your shopping list using voice commands
How to add items to your shopping list (for Voice Commands)
You might be busy, and stopping to enter the items you want to add to your shopping list using your amazon app might be somewhat uneasy. as long as you are close to your echo show device here is how you can go about it.
- Say “Alexa add (item) to my shopping list.
NOTE: if your list has a name you can simply say – Alexa add (item) to my (mention your list name)
you can also do this, “Alexa add sugar, coffee and detergent to my (mention you list name)
How to Add Items to Your Shopping List Using Alexa App
This seems fairly easy, however, if your amazon echo device or any Alexa enabled device isn’t close by and you want to use the app. Follow these simple steps:
- Launch your Alexa app
- Tap the “hamburger icon” at the top left corner
- Now, tap on “list” and select your list,
- You can also use the Alexa default list.
- After doing this, click on “add item” and type the name of the items you want to add
- Now, tap “done”
How to add items to your shopping list using its barcode
This is one of the new advances when it comes to adding items to our list using echo show devices.
Note: scanning the items barcode works on both echo show 5 and 8 versions.
- To do this simply get the item you want to add to your shopping list
- and say “Alexa scan this to my Shopping list”
- Look for the barcode at the back of the item and scan it using your echo show device.
in addition to that, you can ask Amazon to tell you what you are holding while scanning it using an echo show device.
Now, you might be able to create a shopping list and add items using Alexa voice, but you have to use the Alexa app if you want to edit a shopping list name.
However, you can’t edit default names like “shipping and “to Do” under the list section. To do that here are the steps below
How to Change your Shopping list name?
- Launch your Alexa app
- Tap, the menu button which is the “hamburger icon” at the top left corner
- Select “list” and swipe left.
- (add images)
- Now edit the list your list name by selecting “edit” in the small dropdown
- change the list name and tap on “done”
After successfully doing this. the name of the list would be changed.
Now, In a scenario where you want to remove items from your shopping list. You can also do that by either using the Alexa app or by saying some command to your echo device.
To use your echo device here’s is the simple command you have to use.
- say “Alexa remove bread from my shopping lists”
Note: you can remove a single item, but if you have like 6 items in your shopping list and you want to remove four, you have to mention the name of the four, one by one.
that’s not all remember to pause for a bit as you mention each item you want to remove
But if you want to remove everything in your shopping list simply say – “Alexa clear my Shopping List”
Since you might not be able to check off three items out of four items instantly using voice commands, you can however do that using the Alexa app.
Here’s is how to go about it.
How to Remove or check Off Items from your Shopping List
To remove items from your shopping list using the Alexa app, follow these steps:
- Launch your Alexa app
- Tap the menu icon, which has a “hamburger icon”
- Now, tap “lists”, and select your list or the default list you want to remove items from
- After doing that, click the small white circle next to the item you want to remove or check off.
- Now, all the items you checked off will move to the bottom of your shopping list under the “Completed” section and they will also be greyed out
In addition to that, you can also remove these items completely by doing these:
- After checking off the items you want to check off
- Simply, tap the three dots on the upper right corner, and select Hide Completed.
- After doing this successfully, the checked off items will be hidden,
moving forward, let’s say you have added some items to your list days back and you want to check if you didn’t forget anything, you can simply use voice commands to tell Alexa to call out everything on your shopping list

How to View your Shopping List using Alexa
Before proceeding to the points, you need to have an echo device or an amazon enabled device that has a screen.
- Now, say “Alexa show my shopping list”
- or if you have a customized list say “Alexa show my (Mention the name of the list) list
After calling these commands you will see the entire list on the echo device screen.
How to Call Out Your Shopping List using Alexa
However, you can also make Alexa call out all the items in your shopping list, by saying this command :
- say “Alexa what is on my shopping List”
After saying this command, Alexa will firstly tell you the number of items on your shopping, list and list only the first five, if you want to hear the next five it will ask you if she should proceed.

How to View your Shopping List using Alexa App
But, If you want to see your list using the Alexa app simply go to
- “Menu > Lists > Select your “Shopping List” or the list you want to view After tapping the list, you will see all the items in there
Now, do you know you can view the item on your shopping list directly on your Amazon account,
As I said Earlier, Alexa is integrated with amazon so it is already automatic, here’s how to view it on Amazon
- Launch your Amazon app
- Tap the “hamburger icon” at the top left corner
- Locate and click on “List and Registry”
- Now, Tap Your Lists > View Lists > and Alexa Shopping Lists.
- After doing these, tap shop on Amazon,
- Now, you will be able to see the item search results on Amazon
After successfully doing these, you will be able to see the items you added to your shopping list on your amazon app, what if you share your shopping list with your spouse or someone.
Here’s how you can go about it
To carry this out, follow these steps;
- Firstly go to the Main menu > Lists > Shopping Lists
- Now, at the top right corner, you will see a share button
- Tap on share and it will present different locations where you can share your list e.g Email, WhatsApp.
