YouTube is an American online video sharing and social media platform currently owned by Google but it was launched on February 14, 2005 (I can’t help but notice that, that’s on Valentine’s day) by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim.
It is the second most visited website, with more than one billion monthly users who collectively watch more than one billion hours of videos everyday.
YouTube provides a video sharing service where users can watch, like, share, comment and upload their own videos and this video service can be accessed on a range of devices like PCs, tablets, mobile phones and laptops.
In October of 2006, YouTube was bought over by Google for $1.65 billion and that of course changed its business model as it expanded beyond the websites into mobile apps, network television and the ability to link with other services.
The video categories on YouTube includes;
- Music videos
- Video clips
- News
- Short films
- Feature films
- Documentaries
- Teasers and movie trailers
- Live streamings
- Vlogs and more.
Most of these contents are generated by individuals who have channels hosted on the site and viewers are allowed to subscribe to the channels that they like and find useful. YouTube has had a substantial social impact of influencing popular culture, internet trends and creating multimillionaire celebrities.
What is a youtube Channel
Now, if you’ve been following this post up until this point, I am sure you cane across the points where I made mention on YouTube channel. So here, we are going to give a bit more detail about what a YouTube channel is.
A YouTube channel is a member’s personal presence on YouTube. It is where a Youtuber(someone who has decided to open and own a YouTube channel), groups the videos they make and uploads them for subscribers to watch and engage with.
The channel serves as the home page for the user’s account and one can have more than one YouTube channel.
Anyone can access YouTube without having an account, but if you plan to upload videos or make playlists. That is when owning a channel becomes necessary.
Here are the few steps to take if you ever consider opening your own personal YouTube channel.
- First off, you need to log into YouTube with your Google account.
- Then, attempt any action that requires a channel, such as uploading a video.
- Of course, at this point, you will be prompted to create a channel since you don’t already have one.
- Review the information that’s displayed, including your account name and image and confirm the information is accurate to create your channel.
- Another way to go about it, is to sign in, click your profile picture. You will be asked to create a channel. Check the details (with your Google Account name and photo) then confirm to create your channel. It’s that simple!
How to View youtube Channels
Perhaps, you are not necessarily looking to open and own your channel, but you are keen on being a user and of course gleaning some information on YouTube. Then this is for you.
First of all, it is always advised that you subscribe to a channel once you find their contents useful, so that anytime the content creator uploads new contents, you will automatically be notified. This makes it possible for you not to lose out on a content that might be useful for you.
So here you go;
- Open the YouTube App on your phone
- Type the channel name into the Search YouTube bar. If you don’t know the channel name point blankly, you cab search for any keyword(s) that might bring it up in the search
- Tap on the search key and this will display tons of channels, videos and playlists that matches your search.
- Then, if you see a video shared by the channel you are looking for displayed in the search result, you tap the channels profile photo just below the videos bottom-left corner to view the channel’s page.
- Tap the filter icon. That is the three horizontal lines with sliders at the top-right corner of the screen. A list of search filters will appear.
- Tap channel, from here you tap on ”Type”and this tells YouTube to only display channels that match your search.
- Tap a channel in the search result and this displays the channel’s home page and there you are.

This is basically the process where you hey to activate your devices so you can start steaming content from YouTube. It is not that you can’t use YouTube without activation, of course you can but you will only be able to access it as guest. That way, your preferences will not be saved. 
Activate YouTube using youtube.com/activate
- Open the YouTube App on your phone
- Then you go ahead and ”sign in” that device.
- If you do not have an account, then you can create one using your email address, password, gender, country and whatever is required in that field.
- Next, you will go to youtube.com/activate and enter the activation code that appears on your device screen in the box on the website.
- After entering the code, click on ”allow”. Then, proceed to agreeing to the terms and conditions of YouTube.
- Once you agree, a confirmation screen appears and voilà! You can have access to YouTube on that device.
Activate youtube on Samsung TV using youtube.com/activate
- Get the activation code from the Youtube App on your smart TV.
- Enter youtube.com/activate using a browser on your computer or mobile device.
- Sign in to the YouTube App on your TV.
- Enter the code displayed on your smart TV.
- Press Next and wait for the confirmation page to show up.
- Press allow access if it requires permission.

- Enter the code the App have you and click next.
- Then, click allow access when you see the option.
Activate YouTube using youtube.com/activate on Roku.
Roku is a brand of hardware digital media players manufactured by American Company Roku, Inc. They offer access to steaming media content from online services which is where Youtube comes in.
So here is what you need to do, to get your YouTube activated on Roku.
- Be sure your Roku device is connected to a Wi-Fi network, then connect your Roku device to a TV and sign in to your Roku account.
- On the home screen,go ahead ans select the option channel store and press OK on your remote control.
- Navigate to the top free option on the list and select YouTube, then press OK.
- Select the Add channel option and press OK from your remote control.
- The Roku device will take a while to add it to your list of channels. After it has added, you can see the YouTube channel on your channel list.
- One the left side of the YouTube channel, select the Gear icon.
- On the dropdown, select sign in and provide your Google account information if it is your first time of doing this on that device.
- After you’ve signed in, the YouTube channel gives you an 8-digit code with which you will use to activate your YouTube at your youtube.com/activate (You might just want to write down this code).
- Then go over to youtube.com/activate via your laptop or mobile phone.
- Enter your Google account information, if you are not already signed in on that browser. Ensure to provide same details with the one you used on your Roku device.
- Once you have signed in, you will then have to enter the 8-digit code that the Roku device had given you, then proceed.
- If an option pops up, saying ”Allow access”. Just click on it and there you are.
Activate Youtube using youtube.com/activate on Kodi
Kodi is a multi-platform home theatre PC application that allows users access to streaming media content via online services such as Amazon Prime, Oandora, Internet Radio and of course Yourbe. For Kodi, you will have to
- Install your YouTube first. This is done by going to settings first and selecting ”add-ons”.
- Once you have selected that, you can now select install from add-ons.
- Navigate to video add-ons and select YouTube.
- Select install and allow it install on yoir gadget.
- Once that is done, you can access YouTube Add-on by going to videos and selecting ”Add-ons”.
- Open YouTube and click on Sign in. You will be given the normal 8-digit verification code.
- Get s PC or your mobile device, go to youtube.com/activate and of course, enter the 8-digit code in there.
- Click on proceed and if you are asked to ”allow access”, then do so and there you are. You are ready to access YouTube videos on Kodi.
What you must know
There are certain things you should keep in mind and that is;
- The URL is youtube.com/activate. Please note that the slash used here is a backslash and not a forward slash.
- YouTube is Google owned and so it is connected with other Google services as such when you go to this URL, you will be directed to https:/accounts.google.com/, you must not panic.
- If you find it challenging at any point, just reach out to YouTube support.
Long and short of it all is, if you want to activate your YouTube account on a certain device with a streaming service, then you must use youtube.com/activate by inputing the 8-digit YouTube activation code to verify your device and that’s it.
It is not a difficult process at all but rather straightforward and easy once you follow the steps you are supposed to.
