The obvious problem here is that you need a very long cable to listen comfortably to your TV. And even if you have this cable, it’s physically connected to your TV.

You have to be careful not to trip over the cable, and it’s just not very comfortable to work with. We really don’t recommend this method unless your TV has a small screen near you, and even then it’s probably not the best way to do it.

Listen to TV with Your Headphones Through Amazon Fire TV: Bluetooth

If you have an Amazon Fire TV media station or TV that uses Amazon’s Fire TV platform, you have a built-in wireless option: Bluetooth.

Fire TV can connect directly to Bluetooth devices such as game controllers, keyboards and headphones. This means that you can easily pair your favourite Bluetooth headsets (or a second dedicated pair if you just want to have TV headphones nearby) with your Fire TV device like a smartphone.

To use this method to listen to TV with your headphones, go to the Settings menu on the home page and select Bluetooth drivers and devices. Select Other Devices and then Add New Device.

Put your Bluetooth headphones in pairing mode and select them when they appear on the screen. Your Fire TV will now play sound through your headphones as soon as it is connected.

Roku TV: Smartphone apps

Roku multimedia transmitters and Roku televisions like the TCL 6 series and Hisense R8F do not have Bluetooth but allow you to hear what you are seeing without wire. Roku’s answer is private listening, a function that transfers audio to a connected smartphone or tablet via the Roku app.

Install the Roku app (available for Android and iOS) on your mobile device and configure it for use with your Roku transmitter or TV. Once the application is connected, connect the headphones to your phone to automatically mute the TV sound and send it directly to your phone’s headphone jack.

Some Roku devices, like the Roku Ultra and some high-end Roku TV models, don’t even need the Roku app to work. If your Roku remote control has a headphone jack on the side, it can listen privately without your smartphone. Simply plug your headphones (or the headphones that come with the Roku Ultra) into the wall outlet and listen to what you watch privately.

Bluetooth transmitter

If your TV or media transmitter does not support Bluetooth or audio streaming through an application, you need to purchase a type of transmitter to listen without wire.

Bluetooth transmitters are inexpensive devices (typically between $ 20 and $ 50) that connect to the back of your TV to wireless stream audio to a nearby paired Bluetooth audio device, like your headphones.

There are many Bluetooth transmitters on Amazon, but not all of them are suitable for televisions. The cheapest channels are only connected via 3.5 mm sockets, which are available on some TVs but are not the best available connection.

Look for a station with optical audio input (TOSLink or SPDIF). Optical outputs are the most commonly used audio outputs on TVs and offer excellent and stable audio quality thanks to their digital connection.

Although we haven’t tested many of these channels, it’s quite common to find them online at low prices. The TaoTronics Bluetooth 5.0 transmitter is one of the top-rated devices in its class on Amazon and supports 3.5mm and optical audio (although we cannot directly access product quality).

Wireless gaming headsets

If you don’t have a favourite headset or headphones to watch and listen to TV or don’t want to manage Bluetooth pairing, you can still get an all-in-one solution in the form of wireless headsets and gaming headsets. You just have to make sure that they are not Bluetooth headsets.

The vast majority of “wireless headphones” is Bluetooth, which is suitable for most users. However, if you want to get headphones specifically for use with a TV, you’ll need a non-Bluetooth device with a dedicated transmitter. Some special and high-quality headphones are available in this area. However, it is much easier to find a wireless gaming headset that suits your needs.

The most important detail is to make sure the headphones are compatible with an optical audio input. Most inexpensive wireless gaming headsets only use USB adapters.

If you’re looking for one that can be easily connected directly to your TV, you’ll need to look for medium or long-range pairs. We recommend the Astro Gaming A20, a comfortable wireless headset for $ 150 that offers very good sound quality and supports optical audio for the transmitter.

If you really want to be pampered, the $ 330 Steelseries Arctis Pro Wireless sounds and feels even better and offers very practical extras like two replaceable batteries and Bluetooth connectivity above the transmitter.
